How to speak French has everything to do with how committed you are to frequently practicing what you learn. The key to learning French or any foreign language for that matter is how much you can retain, especially on those early stages of learning. The foundation you build early on will propel you and will also set the tone for your language learning journey.
All my students know how much I emphasize minimum DAILY exposure. The simple reason is that as a language learner, you need as much immersion as possible, and if you are not currently living in a French speaking environment, the only way to be immersed in the language is to initiate the immersion yourself through daily exposure, practice and repetition.
For that matter, even if you were living in a French speaking environment, you would still need daily practice to make any progress. It may simply not feel like “practice” because you might be out actively trying to use the language in real time; but it is practice nonetheless. You cannot learn a language without it. This is not to say that you cannot make it fun! In fact, you should.
That brings me to the next thing I strongly recommend: It is imperative that you jump straight to conversational tidbits and start speaking right off the bat, as opposed to delaying, worrying about grammatical perfection and such. This should take care of itself as you deepen your study of the language, and you will have a lot more fun learning how to speak French if you are free of those types of worries initially.
Desire, fun and enthusiasm will go a long way in propelling you towards your French learning experience. The first step in that direction is to master the basics you use every day, such as greetings, introductions and essential daily interactions with people.
One place where you could start this process is on bonjour.com, a free resource that is easy and user-friendly. BBC's Languages/French is another resource I recommend to get your basics and beyond, yet keeping it simple.
On this hub, other useful materials will be made available to you to assist you in your learning quest. I will add numerous tips on how to speak French, and most importantly, I have opened this up as an interactive blog for you and all my French class students. That means you should report here frequently to have a learning community, to see what others are saying, to ask questions, to post comments, and to generally be inspired and motivated to learn more.
As you become more advanced, you might consider some of the lessons and links I will post on this and other pages to keep you making steady progress, and on to becoming fluent in the future. But before we get ahead of ourselves, please take a minute to tell us this:
If you have learned something in French lately, no matter how elementary, do share it! Sharing it with others is a way to cement your learning. The truth is, group learning helps you and everyone else too.
